proposed design

After hearing from skaters and the people that will be using the Sun Prairie Skate Park, we realized that our original design proposal, while pretty sweet, wasn’t the design that would benefit everyone equally. So, we decided the best way to go about a redesign would be to find out what everyone wanted to see in a park. We set out to create a poll with different features and got votes and suggestions as to what this new addition needed. This new design is the result of that poll.

Behold: the new Sun Prairie Skate Park Addition Design!

Phase 1 Features:

Phase 1

Phase 1

Because a bowl received the most votes on our public design pole it has been included here in phase 1. Its unique shape will use concrete pool coping around the entire lip for its grind-able surface and incudes a 5ft shallow end with a complimenting 8 or 9ft deep end (the deep end measurement will be determined when we know how much money we will put towards this phase). This bowl will be a challenging one for all age groups and is sure to increase your experience and level for transitional skating and will set a new standard for skateparks in our region.

The first arm of the street section has a few of the top 10 elements from the design pole, the rest of them come later in the phasing structures. You will notice the three banked hip that allows access to the first arm yet will be left dead ended in the middle to encourage the completed design. The middle of the arm has a bank to bank transfer, what we are calling the “snaking ledge launch”, and a ledge that has very steep banks that make up its sides to use for wallies. The back of the arm ends with a quarter pipe to allow its users to go back and forth between the first phase of the course and the old park.

Phase 2 Features:

Phase 2

Phase 2

In order to continue with the flow of our addition, phase 2 has been designed to connect phase one to the other side of the old park. Another quarter pipe has been added to the one from phase 1 that creates another hip making it easy to transfer to each section of the park. The hubba ledges, euro gap, and rail were selected from the pole’s most wanted list as well. The odd looking corner piece is a clam shell hybrid with a bank to wall in the middle and transitional pockets on either side. This element is very versatile and will allow you to stretch your skate imagination; you will be able to use it to maintain speed coming from any direction in the park and it can be ollied, stalled, grinded, or slid in dozens of different ways.

Phase 2 Estimated Cost: $83,112

Phase 3 Features:

Phase 3

Phase 3

This phase will complete our new addition. It finally connects with the dead side of the three banked hip from phase 1 and includes a china banked mini ramp with ledges in between and leads to the clam hybrid. If you take the time to examine the new addition in its entirety you’ll notice that the course doesn’t waste any concrete making the layout completely skate-able and has plenty of lines. It also has a good amount of grassy area and trees that create a relaxing and shady environment. The shelter, picnic tables, benches and grill placement and involvement may vary. This will all be determined as the skatepark develops.

Phase 3 Estimated Cost: $54,252

Considering the input from our public design meeting and the design pole, our committee and Grindline Skateparks have done their best to come up with this design for the addition.  It is a truly fantastic world class course that can be enjoyed by all ages and skill levels for years to come.  Please keep in mind that costs are in fact estimates and can be lessened by material donations.

Total estimated cost for completed project: $241,256
